More than 5.8 million plug-in electric cars were sold during the first half of 2023, accounting for about 15 percent of the total car sales globally. Today, we will take a look at the largest manufacturers (automotive groups) of rechargeable cars. According to EV-Volumes data, shared by Jose Pontes, five OEMs are responsible for more than half of all plug-in car sales.
Plug-ins (BEVs + PHEVs)
BYD is ranked largest and Tesla second largest by number of EV (BEV + PHEV) sold.
Battery-Electric Vehicles (BEVs)
Tesla is ranked largest and BYD second largest by number of BEV sold.
Note: PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is powered by gasoline and battery; not considered as pure EV. BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) is zero carbon and only powered by battery.

According to recent data from Cui Dongshu, Secretary General of CPCA (the China Passenger Car Association), world car sales in June 2023 reached 7.87 million units, representing an 11% increase compared to the previous year.
According to CPCA, the top 10 automakers in global auto sales in the first half of 2023 are Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai-Kia, Stellantis, Renault-Nissan, GM, Ford, Honda, Suzuki, and Mercedes-Benz. However, specific quantity data is not provided, only market share. China’s largest automaker, BYD, ranks 11th in the world.
Neither BYD and Tesla are included in the list.

ZnWC OP : I think both data are correct because it depends on the definition. InsideEVs quoted Electric vehicle sales data and CarNewsChina used Automakers' car which can include ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars. BYD and Tesla no longer made ICE cars. Hence it depends on which definition you want; just don't get confused.
