Xpeng's AI car started pre-sales for USD29,600 and gathered 30,000 orders
The Xpeng P7+ made its international debut at the Paris Motor Show 2024 and started pre-sales in China with a starting price of RMB209,800 yuan (USD29,600). It is RMB22,100 (USD3,120) cheaper than the China-made Tesla Model 3. It has gathered 30,000 orders in 1 hour and 48 minutes after the pre-sales started.
The Xpeng P7+has an aerodynamic design. The drag coefficient of the Xpeng P7+ is 0.206 Cd. It's not as good as the Mona M03 with 0.194 Cd. But it is better than the new Tesla Model 3 with 0.219 Cd.
Xpeng decided to ditch LiDAR sensors for cameras. As a result, they've come up with the next-gen AI Eagle Eye Vision autonomous driving system. Its main improvement compared to the previous AD system is perception distance and recognition speed. According to Xpeng, the perception distance of the Eagle Eye system rose by 125%. The recognition speed was increased by 40%.
The automaker relayed that its camera sensors collect visual information more accurately and clearly than traditional cameras and can scope out an area as large as 1.8 football fields. XPeng also stated that its Eagle Eye advanced cameras are limited by city or road conditions and have "door-to-door" and "parking space-to-parking space" intelligent driving capabilities.
XPeng said the P7+ will utilize AI across several of its core systems, including ADAS and smart driving, power usage, energy control, and thermal management.
Another impressive feature of the Xpeng P7+ is its size. Its makers describe the P7+ as a new "three-in-one species" that offers the posture of a coupe, the space of an SUV, and the comfort of an MPV, all complimented by luxury executive-level interiors. This liftback is spacious and boasts hefty dimensions of 5056/1937/1512 mm. Xpeng officials are confident there is enough room for the driver and four adult passengers inside the P7+. On the other hand, Xpeng showed that the P7+ can hold up to 33 20-inch suitcases inside.
The entry-level Xpeng P7+ has a peak power of 180 kW (241 hp). A more powerful variant offers an electric motor for 230 kW (308 hp). There are two LFP battery options for the P7+: a 60.7 kWh for 620 km range (CLTC) and 76.3 kWh for 710 km (CLTC). A standard 800V high-voltage SiC platform from XPeng G9 and G6 delivers ultra-fast charging and low energy consumption of 11.6 kWh/100km (62 miles), thanks to a low drag coefficient.
While unveiling the new model in Paris, XPeng Motors stressed its commitment to European expansion despite recently imposed tariffs on Chinese-built EV imports. The automaker currently sells the P7 sedan, G9 SUV and G6 compact in several markets overseas, including Norway, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, Iceland, Spain, and Portugal.
The P7+ will soon join its BEV siblings in Europe as XPeng has promised further expansions to new markets.
As mentioned, the starting price of the Xpeng P7+ is RMB209,800 (USD29,600). People in China can book this vehicle for RMB99 (USD14). Their deposit will be transferred into a RMB3,000 (USD425) car purchase price deduction. The automaker didn't disclose information about the P7+'s trim levels. It is seemingly more expensive than the smaller Xpeng Mona M03 sedan with a price range of RMB119,800 – 155,800 (USD17,000 – 22,000).
According to Xpeng, the pre-sale orders for the P7+ exceeded 30,000 in 1 hour and 48 minutes. However, those are refundable pre-orders. So, some buyers can refuse to buy a car in the future. Anyway, Xpeng aims to start deliveries of the P7+ in China in Nov this year.
