Excluding aircraft, non-defense capital goods (core capital goods) orders for durable goods in October, as announced by the US Department of Commerce on the 27th, decreased by 0.2% compared to the previous month. Market expectations were for an increase of 0.1%. The September figures were revised downward from an initial 0.7% increase to a 0.3% increase.
Core capital goods orders, which serve as a leading indicator of private sector investment, unexpectedly decreased, suggesting a slowdown in corporate equipment investment for the current quarter.
Core capital goods shipments increased by 0.2%. The previous month had seen a 0.1% decrease.
Orders excluding defense-related items from capital goods turned from a 3.5% decrease last month to a 1.4% increase. Shipments decreased by 1.9%. The previous month had a 3.8% decrease.
Overall durable goods orders increased by 0.2%. The previous month had a 0.4% decrease. Durable goods orders refer to items, from toasters to airplanes, that are meant to last three years or more.
The increase in orders for trucking equipment from -1.9% in the previous month to +0.5% was a contributing factor.
