Malaysia's sewer oil futures are expected to be listed next month.
Malaysia is expected to launch sewer oil futures contracts in December!
Foreign media reports that the Malaysian exchange $BURSA (1818.MY)$Director Mohamad Sharin revealed to the media at the International Oil Conference in Dalian, China.
"Now waiting for the final stage approval from the regulatory authorities. Therefore, this futures contract will be launched in December or the first quarter of next year depending on the approval progress."
Following the launch of soybean oil futures in March, the futures of discarded edible oil, commonly known as "gutter oil", are new products introduced by the Malaysian exchange derivatives department. Sharin stated that as the world's most liquid trading platform for crude palm oil futures, the Malaysian exchange is actively seeking to establish a position as a trading center for "gutter oil".
Waste oil is the main raw material for the production of renewable biofuels, widely used in the aviation sector. Malaysia discards about 0.54 million tons of waste oil each year without effective treatment, indicating huge development potential.
As the world's second largest palm oil exporter, Malaysia exported nearly 0.3 million tons of biodiesel last year and consumed about 1.1 million tons domestically.
Sha Lin also pointed out that the market is experiencing growth in demand for gutter oil, driven by sustainable development initiatives and biofuel.
"Our gutter oil futures contract is specifically designed for the Southeast Asian market, meeting the regional industry demands and trends."
Previously, Bloomberg cited insiders reporting that this futures contract will be cash-settled, with pricing based on the offshore price (FOB) released by S&P Global Commodity Insights.
