State government's acquisition finally approved, Affin Bank surged in early trading.
(Kuala Lumpur, 23rd) On the eve of announcing the acquisition, Affin Bank $AFFIN (5185.MY)$ surged by 4.53% in early trading, reaching 3.00 ringgit at midday break.
The stock price opened significantly higher this morning by 6.62%, later reaching a peak of 3.11 ringgit, with an increase of 8.36%. However, subsequent profit-taking by investors narrowed the gains, but the increase still remains around 4%.
As early as last week, multiple media reports stated that the Prime Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, announced that the national bank had approved the Sarawak government's acquisition of a majority stake in Affin Bank.
Meanwhile, the New Straits Times and Borneo Post reported that the official announcement of the acquisition will be made today.
According to reports, Abang Johari confirmed at a centennial celebration that all necessary procedures, including those involving the central bank, have been completed. He emphasized that the reason for not announcing it earlier was to prevent possible stock market speculation. "All procedures related to the central bank have been satisfied, and the Sarawak government is about to own its own bank.
In July, Abang Johari pointed out that the national bank conditionally approved the Sarawak government to increase its shareholding in Affin Bank to 30% by acquiring it from the Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT).
Currently, the Sarawak government holds a 4.95% stake in Bank of E Asia, while LTAT holds 28.8% equity.
