Western Digital has added an 11th platter, increasing the capacity of its rotating magnetic disk hard disk drive (HDD) by 2TB (TB). This is reflected in two new drives, the standard 26TB DC H590 and the new 32TB SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) DCH HC690.
SMR drives overlap recorded tracks - think of the construction of a thatched ship - each new track slightly overlaps the previous one. It can be read, but rewriting is somewhat inhibited compared to higher-density conventional recording.
This means that SMR drives are best used for sequential writing, when full, they will be completely erased and replaced by new writes, somewhat similar to tape. In contrast, on standard drives, you can write and erase at any time....
