When the Egyptians approached the Israelites quickly, they had nowhere to escape. The bare mountains on both sides had no trees or caves to hide in. The sea surrounded them on the other side. It was an impossible situation. The Bible says, "And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians marched after them. So they were very afraid, and the children of Israel cried out to the Lord." (Exodus 14:10, NKJV).
Imagine putting yourself in their shoes. Your family surrounds you: children, grandparents, and other relatives. Suddenly, you hear the rumble of chariots, the clashing of swords, and the fierce battle cries of a ruthless and bloodthirsty army. Wouldn't you be afraid?
When we are overwhelmed by humanly fears in a sudden crisis, God is very patient with us. Our Lord is not a harsh supervisor. He knows this will be a terrifying experience for the Israelites. In fact, he would be pleased to hear such a prayer: "Lord, we are afraid! But we know that you have faithfully saved us. When we were in Egypt, you delivered us from the angel of death and all calamities. We know that you also have the power to rescue us from this crisis. Father, we entrust our lives into your hands!"
Is this the voice of the Israelites? No! The Bible says: "They said to Moses: 'Was it because there were no...'
