The Financial Services Agency is currently conducting private study sessions with experts to discuss virtual currency regulations in Japan.
With the Financial Services Agency's current review, if virtual currencies are reclassified from payment methods under the Funds Settlement Law to be treated as financial products like securities, the possibility of approving virtual currency exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in Japan becomes apparent. In the USA, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has already approved a physical Bitcoin ETF for operation in 2024, with Ethereum ETF as the second example already introduced. Additionally, other cryptocurrencies like Solana (SOL), XRP (Ripple), Litecoin (LTC), and Dogecoin (DOGE) are currently in a similar state of applying to the SEC as virtual currency ETFs.
