Economists forecast a similar, 5.3% year-over-over gain for August, as well as a 4.3% rise in the core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices. The 4.3% estimate would match July's rate of growth.

The University of Michigan releases its Consumer Sentiment index for September. Economists forecast a 71.3 reading, one point higher than August's. The August figure was the lowest since December 2011.
