DealAnthony : The True Guru: Buffet vs. Wood
Warren Buffett takes the value investing approach with his holding company Berkshire Hathaway. He doesn’t invest in technology, making an exception for Apple. He is looking for companies that he believes are currently trading below their true value and focus on long-term results. He focuses on stocks that are solid and steadily rising. As a result, the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio is full of old-school companies that have stood the test of time, such as Coca-Cola, Bank of America, and ExxonMobil.
Cathie Wood is the complete contrast of Buffett. She founded ARK Invest and focuses on long-term growth with low correlation to traditional investment strategies. Wood specifically targets disruptive innovation, focusing on companies whose earnings are growing strongly and where further growth is expected. She asserts that the standard benchmarks of “safe” investments emphasize past performance and not potential future performance. Hence her company focuses on investing at the pace of innovation, with top holding such as Tesla, Square, and Teledoc Health.
The strategies of Warren Buffett and Cathie Wood could hardly be more different.
In any case, all can agree that both are phenomenal investors. Who is the true guru? It comes down to an individual’s risk/reward tolerance. Buffett with steady decade-long returns or Wood with strong short-term performance.
In an ever-changing society, innovation is key to tremendous success. No doubt both will produce positive returns. However, I side with Cathie Wood and ARK Invest based on the premise that technologies and innovations are the now and the future of things.
