U.S. stocks advance as debt, energy worries ease
U.S. equities rose on Thursday, bolstered by progress on U.S. debt-ceiling talks and easing concerns about Europe's energy crunch.
The $S&P 500 Index (.SPX.US)$ climbed as much as 1.5% before nearly halving gains on China's plans to tighten its supervision over technology companies. The advance was led by the materials and consumer discretionary sectors, extending a three-day rally to 2.3%. The yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury note climbed to 1.57%, the highest since June.
Diesel stockpiles are at a 20-year low as U.S. heads into winter
The U.S. may be heading into winter with the lowest stockpiles of heating oil to meet surging demand in more than two decades.
Inventories of distillates -- used as diesel for both transportation and heating oil -- are enough to meet 31.2 days of demand, according to the Energy Information Administration. That's the tightest it has been for this time of the year since 2000.
Palantir wins $90 million contract with U.S. veterans affairs
$Palantir (PLTR.US)$ said Thursday it won a contract with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the latest in a steady drumbeat of new government deals for the company.
The contract -- a $90 million, four-year deal -- comes just days after Palantir renewed and expanded contracts with the U.S. Army and the National Institutes of Health. Those deals are worth nearly $900 million over several years.
Cathie Wood's flagship ETF hit by record outflows in September
Short sellers enjoyed returns of more than 9 per cent from their bets against star investment manager Cathie Wood's flagship exchange traded fund in September, as the fund suffered its worst monthly outflows on record, data show.
Altogether, investors pulled $905m from the $ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK.US)$ contributing to a decline in assets under management of 13 per cent from $22bn at the end of August to $19bn at the end of September.
Tesla moves headquarters from California to Texas
$Tesla (TSLA.US)$ is moving its headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin, Texas, CEO Elon Musk announced at the company's shareholder meeting on Thursday. The meeting took place at Tesla’s vehicle assembly plant under construction outside of Austin on a property that borders the Colorado River, near the city's airport.
However, the company plans to increase production in its California plant regardless of the headquarters move.
Lawmakers have a deal on a short-term debt ceiling increase, Senate Majority Leader Schumer says
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that lawmakers have reached a deal on a short-term debt ceiling increase. "We have reached agreement to extend the debt ceiling through early December, and it's our hope that we can get this done as soon as today," Schumer said. The pact allows the debt limit to increase by $480 billion, a sum the Treasury Department says will let it pay bills until Dec. 3.
Conagra, PepsiCo and other food makers grapple with higher costs
Major food companies are boosting prices as they contend with escalating costs, and labor and transportation problems that are hampering the flow of staples to grocery-store shelves.

Comcast enters smart-TV market with launch of sky glass in Europe
$Churchill Capital Corp V (CCV.US)$ on Thursday said it has built a smart TV that will run on its own operating system, the company's latest answer to the streaming wars.
The broadband-powered smart TV, called Sky Glass, will be available to U.K. customers of Sky, Comcast's European pay-TV unit, later this month and in other European markets next year. The company wouldn't say whether a Comcast-powered smart TV would be launched in the U.S. soon.
