I work in AI, while my husband is in quantum computing, both with PhDs from prestigious universities, solely engaged in frontline scientific research. Quantum computing is poised to be the next AI, currently mostly just a topic within the stock market... the stock market is just the stock market... Quantum computing stocks may continue to soar, but scientifically, there will only be certain application opportunities in at least 5-10 years if it develops well. (I dare not say 20 years, because 3 years ago we thought AGI would take 10 years, but now we see its early stages.)
But just like how everyone is slapping their thighs now, why didn't they buy Bitcoin over a decade ago... Once quantum computing is achieved, many may slap their thighs in regret in 20 years, wondering why they didn't invest in XX stocks.
I really want to short, but my husband disagrees (so I won't short). It seems that the stock market doesn't care whether something makes money now or in the near future: the bigger the idea, the more investors believe in it, which is more crucial. Otherwise, why is it that even though all AI practitioners can't do without A100, NVIDIA is still plummeting. Quoting a frontline scientific researcher: Quantum computing research is quite fascinating, filled with unsolved problems everywhere, publishing papers endlessly, much higher cost-effectiveness compared to toiling over AI models.
On the scientific level, I recommend everyone to understand a few concepts: quantum advantage, NISQ (noisy intermediate-scale quantum era), physical qubit, logic qubit, si...

Hey mooers!
The Bank of Canada, under Governor Tiff Macklem, has made a second significant rate cut, dropping the overnight rate by 50 basis points to 3.25%. This decision, influenced by US President-elect Donald Trump's threat of 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, marks the first time since the 2009 financial crisis, aside from the Covid pandemic, that back-to-back 50 basis point cuts have been implemented. In 2020, as the shadow of the epidemic enveloped the globe, I made a decision that many considered bold - I resigned from the stable government regional clinic job, and chose to join a private hospital in Kuching, Sarawak as a pharmacist.
Although the pace of work at the private hospital is quite hectic, the hospital provides quite good benefits to employees in the initial stage. Especially in the first few years, at the year-end, the hospital would give each employee a relatively generous bonus. This extra reward not only serves as recognition for everyone's hard work but also becomes a motivation for us to look forward to the year-end. For me, this is also a completely new experience, considering that during my time as a government civil servant, I never enjoyed similar treatment.
However, over the past two years, the situation has quietly changed. For some unknown reason, the hospital suddenly stopped the distribution of the year-end bonus, without any prior notice or explanation. This unexpected turn of events caught many medical staff off guard, and raised significant complaints and dissatisfaction. Especially for colleagues with lower incomes, the year-end bonus is not just a reward, but also an important source of income used to cover household expenses each year.
The cancellation of the year-end bonuses undoubtedly increases the financial pressure on many families. Under the impact of the epidemic, the cost of living continues to rise, while salary increases have not shown significant improvement. The cancellation of the year-end bonuses adds insult to injury. Many colleagues have started to feel disappointed in the hospital's decisions, and a atmosphere of complaints is gradually spreading among medical staff. Although most people still hold their positions, the evident emotional downturn is undeniable.
