Tazzin Darrignazio : I personally decided to go ahead with it because this fund has the highest payout of all US dividend stocks despite the NAV decay (essentially the others are 'not worth it after the tax', as their payout is usually 3 to 6%, and the 30% tax just kills it). YM still pays decently with the tax in effect, imo.
But my personal situation is also different from yours. I need the income now (while already having some stashed away in stable growth) and this fund may just be able to do it for me, even if I get taxed at 30%. Local stocks just don't have anything comparable to this, so this is a risk I'm willing to take. I will monitor and decide down the road if it's still worth it after some months.

Tazzin : The real danger is when the NAV doesn't recover after the payout day, and instead keeps dropping for extended months. Then you would want to look for a way to exit, or to hold on and hope it makes a come back if you believe in its underlying stock (eg NVDY to NVDIA, MSTY to MSTR).
So far, of the YM funds, MSTY and NVDY are doing well with little to no NAV decay, though they are both a bit pricey rn. For ULTY, it dropped a lot since inception, then is now stable around 10 to 11 for the last few months (the best thing you could ask for in these sort of funds tbh), and with some changes coming to it, there's hope for it to bounce back. But the main appeal of ULTY now is it's low cost and high yield, allowing you to put less upfront investment for decent returns.

Tazzin 101824250 OP : Yes, if you can do your own covered calls, go for it. People opt for this one because they either don't know how to, or lack the time to, so they essentially 'pay' someone to do it for them (and that also puts you at the mercy of the fund managers' competence). At the end of the day, these funds are only if you want an income, it's not meant for growth

Tazzin OP 104630476 : Some good starting points to look at would be banks, reits, utilities, health care (try searching blue chip companies) that have slow growth but pay out dividends. Some pay out biannually, some are monthly, some quarterly. Generally 3 to 5% dividend payout is standard, anything above 10% tends to be unsustainable, as it means they are paying you more than they can afford. Some individual companies also give dividends, but that would require you to do a background check and research on the company's track record. If you believe that it will continue to do well, then you can invest in them (a tip here is to look at their PE (price to earnings) ratio, low PE means they are undervalued, while a high one is overvalued). I also recently started investing, but these are what I've gathered so far. Leaning to the safe side for now in Bursa by sticking with blue chip companies.
