沃伦·巴菲特认为这项投资将成为他公司在未来100年的关键资产，而凯茜·伍德则称其为"不良创意"。
伯克希尔哈撒韦发布年度股东信后，两者之间的这种动态关系充分展现出来，股东信中大肆宣扬一个伍德认为没有未来的领域：铁路。
巴菲特称，其公司对伯灵顿北圣达菲铁路公司的所有权是其"四巨头"之一，尽管它是一家可以追溯至1848年的老经济企业，但却有一个充满希望的未来。
“BNSF继续是美国商业的首要动脉，这使其成为美国以及伯克希尔不可或缺的资产。如果BNSF载运的众多重要产品被改为由公路运输，美国的碳排放量将激增，”巴菲特在年度信中说道。
根据营业收入计，BNSF铁路公司是美国最大的铁路公司，2021年报告了总额600亿美元的创纪录收入。巴菲特预计这一纪录将在未来多年不断被打破。
“我冒昧做一个罕见的预测：BNSF将成为伯克希尔和我们国家一个世纪后的关键资产，”巴菲特说。
但伍德的ark投资公司从另一个角度看待铁路业务。ark在其《糟糕的想法报告》中称投资者应该避免投资铁路业务，称其为"糟糕的想法"，因为它很容易被颠覆。
根据伍德的说法，这种颠覆将由自动驾驶电动卡车的采用推动，这些卡车将"与铁路货运具有成本竞争力，并提供更好、更便利的服务。"
根据报告，自动驾驶电动卡车的潜在便利性和成本效益应有助于扭转自公路运输企业自21世纪初以来从卡车司机手中获取的市场份额增长和定价权，从而导致固定资产4000亿美元的潜在价值破坏。
"电动和自动化技术的结合将极大提高生产率，并大幅降低公路运输的成本，"报告称。伍德预计自动半卡车将使卡车运输成本降低75%，每吨英里成本为3分钱，"在更低的电力和维护成本的帮助下，与铁路价格竞争。"
根据报告，伍德预计从铁路过渡到自动卡车将在未来4至9年内实现。
