Weekly Syrup: Chinese stocks surged. Time for some eastern flavors?
Hey mooers!
On September 24, China unveiled its largest economic stimulus package since the pandemic, sparking a surge in AH shares and U.S.-listed Chinese stocks. Consequently, Chinese stocks traded in the U.S. saw significant gains on Tuesday, with the $纳斯达克中国金龙指数 (.HXC.US)$ closing up over 9%, its largest increase since 2022. Notable stocks included $BOSS直聘 (BZ.US)$ soaring over 19%, $哔哩哔哩 (BILI.US)$ up 17%, $京东 (JD.US)$ nearly 14%, and $小鹏汽车 (XPEV.US)$, $蔚来 (NIO.US)$, $理想汽车 (LI.US)$, and $拼多多 (PDD.US)$ all climbing more than 11%. But before other recaps, let's look at something different:
What's Moo'ed?
"What's Moo'ed" is a space that captures fun, newsworthy, jaw-dropping and sometimes confusing (lmao) news clips for mooers so that you know this is a colorful world (or a weird and speechless one).
1. I was limited by my time
A child in a 1941 photo appears to be holding an iPad — and viewers are shocked. The picture, taken by Farm Security Administration photographer Edwin Rosskam, captured a group of people of color standing on line to enter a movie theater on Chicago’s South Side. If this is true, it must be "shot on iPhone"
2. You can't believe why I'm late, boss.
Two squirrels who boarded a rush hour train to Gatwick in the UK forced operators to cancel the service and passengers to flee to other carriages. I guess it makes sense to some extent: there must be some "nuts" on the train. And people are squeezed on the road by these squirrels.
3. Do I sell myself?
If you've used Snapchat's AI-generated selfies, check your settings. According to 404 Media, Snap might use your face in “personalized sponsored content and ads” through the My Selfie feature, which requires your consent upon first use. Well, if the goods still can't sell well afterwards, that would really hurt. And is it possible for me to share the profit?
Okay, let's dive back to the syrup:
Is the rally in Chinese assets sustainable, and can it be leveraged? Following policy changes, billionaire investor David Tepper revealed in a CNBC interview on September 26 that he is purchasing more Chinese assets, citing their continued low valuations despite recent price increases.
Key factors making Chinese stocks increasingly appealing include:
- Low Valuations: As of July 2024, the MSCI China Index's PE ratio stands at 11.6, close to historical lows.
- Interest Rate Cuts: With the Federal Reserve reducing rates, international capital is likely to gravitate towards higher returns in markets like China.
- Yuan Appreciation: The yuan has strengthened since July, likely influenced by rate cuts and a weakening dollar, enhancing the value of Chinese assets. Read more>>

There are other related readings on the recent Chinese stock surge:
After the rate cut, what's next?
Following the Federal Reserve's interest rate cuts on September 18, the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield, a key benchmark for global assets, unexpectedly rose from 3.65% on September 17 to 3.78% by September 26, leading to lower prices for long-term U.S. Treasury bonds.
Meanwhile, yields on shorter-term bonds fell, widening the yield spread between the 2-year and 10-year Treasuries and causing a more pronounced steepening of the yield curve. This raises questions about why long-term rates increased post-cut and what strategies investors should adopt with U.S. Treasuries now. Read more>>

Let's see what other mooers are talking about in the past week!
