Here's Why We Think LendingClub (NYSE:LC) Is Well Worth Watching

这就是为什么我们认为LendingClub(纽约证券交易所代码:LC)值得一看

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like LendingClub (NYSE:LC). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

LendingClub's Improving Profits

In the last three years LendingClub's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. In impressive fashion, LendingClub's EPS grew from US$1.07 to US$2.44, over the previous 12 months. It's a rarity to see 129% year-on-year growth like that.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Our analysis has highlighted that LendingClub's revenue from operations did not account for all of their revenue in the previous 12 months, so our analysis of its margins might not accurately reflect the underlying business. While LendingClub did well to grow revenue over the last year, EBIT margins were dampened at the same time. So it seems the future may hold further growth, especially if EBIT margins can remain steady.

Are LendingClub Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Insider interest in a company always sparks a bit of intrigue and many investors are on the lookout for companies where insiders are putting their money where their mouth is. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

It's good to see LendingClub insiders walking the walk, by spending US$359k on shares in just twelve months. This, combined with the lack of sales from insiders, should be a great signal for shareholders in what's to come. Zooming in, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Director Allan Landon for US$195k worth of shares, at about US$10.01 per share.

Along with the insider buying, another encouraging sign for LendingClub is that insiders, as a group, have a considerable shareholding. As a matter of fact, their holding is valued at US$20m. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Even though that's only about 2.9% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.
