Insiders At GMS Sold US$3.5m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Many GMS Inc. (NYSE:GMS) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At GMS

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the President, John Turner, for US$2.1m worth of shares, at about US$66.58 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$59.03. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Does GMS Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Insiders own 0.6% of GMS shares, worth about US$15m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About GMS Insiders?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded GMS shares in the last quarter. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by GMS insiders. But we do like the fact that insiders own a fair chunk of the company. While we like knowing what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. At Simply Wall St, we've found that GMS has 2 warning signs (1 can't be ignored!) that deserve your attention before going any further with your analysis.
