Possible Bearish Signals With American Financial Group Insiders Disposing Stock
In the last year, many American Financial Group, Inc. (NYSE:AFG) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

American Financial Group Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the President & Director, John Berding, sold US$845k worth of shares at a price of US$147 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$107. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Insider Ownership Of American Financial Group
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. American Financial Group insiders own about US$2.1b worth of shares (which is 23% of the company). Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
