Wayfair Inc. (NYSE:W) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 30% in the last month. But only the myopic could ignore the astounding decline over three years. The share price has sunk like a leaky ship, down 79% in that time. So it's about time shareholders saw some gains. Of course the real question is whether the business can sustain a turnaround.

Given that Wayfair didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

In the last three years Wayfair saw its revenue shrink by 7.2% per year. That's not what investors generally want to see. Having said that the 21% annualized share price decline highlights the risk of investing in unprofitable companies. We're generally averse to companies with declining revenues, but we're not alone in that. Don't let a share price decline ruin your calm. You make better decisions when you're calm.

We're pleased to report that Wayfair shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 63% over one year. That certainly beats the loss of about 9% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
