Investors in Anywhere Real Estate (NYSE:HOUS) From Five Years Ago Are Still Down 54%, Even After 19% Gain This Past Week

Anywhere Real Estate Inc. (NYSE:HOUS) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 62% in the last month. But that can't change the reality that over the longer term (five years), the returns have been really quite dismal. In fact, the share price has declined rather badly, down some 56% in that time. So we're hesitant to put much weight behind the short term increase. Of course, this could be the start of a turnaround.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last five years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

Because Anywhere Real Estate made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last half decade, Anywhere Real Estate saw its revenue increase by 4.4% per year. That's far from impressive given all the money it is losing. This lacklustre growth has no doubt fueled the loss of 9% per year, in that time. We'd want to see proof that future revenue growth is likely to be significantly stronger before getting too interested in Anywhere Real Estate. However, it's possible too many in the market will ignore it, and there may be an opportunity if it starts to recover down the track.

It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. This free report showing analyst forecasts should help you form a view on Anywhere Real Estate

A Different Perspective

Investors in Anywhere Real Estate had a tough year, with a total loss of 6.9%, against a market gain of about 19%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 9% doled out over the last five years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Anywhere Real Estate (at least 1 which is a bit unpleasant) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
