What underlying fundamental trends can indicate that a company might be in decline? When we see a declining return on capital employed (ROCE) in conjunction with a declining base of capital employed, that's often how a mature business shows signs of aging. Basically the company is earning less on its investments and it is also reducing its total assets. And from a first read, things don't look too good at Atrion (NASDAQ:ATRI), so let's see why.

从第一读来看,Atrion(纳斯达克股票代码:ATRI)的情况看起来并不太好,所以让我们看看为什么。

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Atrion is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.099 = US$25m ÷ (US$265m - US$15m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).

0.099 = 2,500 万美元 ¥(2.65 亿美元-1,500 万美元) (基于截至2023年9月的过去十二个月)

Therefore, Atrion has an ROCE of 9.9%. In absolute terms, that's a low return but it's around the Medical Equipment industry average of 9.3%.

The Trend Of ROCE

ROCE 的趋势

We are a bit worried about the trend of returns on capital at Atrion. About five years ago, returns on capital were 19%, however they're now substantially lower than that as we saw above. And on the capital employed front, the business is utilizing roughly the same amount of capital as it was back then. This combination can be indicative of a mature business that still has areas to deploy capital, but the returns received aren't as high due potentially to new competition or smaller margins. If these trends continue, we wouldn't expect Atrion to turn into a multi-bagger.

The Bottom Line

底线

In summary, it's unfortunate that Atrion is generating lower returns from the same amount of capital. It should come as no surprise then that the stock has fallen 44% over the last five years, so it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. With underlying trends that aren't great in these areas, we'd consider looking elsewhere.
