When a single insider purchases stock, it is typically not a major deal. However, when multiple insiders purchase stock, like in Ameris Bancorp's (NASDAQ:ABCB) instance, it's good news for shareholders.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Ameris Bancorp Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Corporate Executive VP & Chief Strategy Officer James LaHaise bought US$330k worth of shares at a price of US$33.03 per share. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of US$50.57. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Ameris Bancorp insiders own about US$200m worth of shares (which is 5.7% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
