Insiders Could Have Profited By Holding Onto MarineMax Shares Despite 15% Drop

Simply Wall St ·  01/26 06:54

MarineMax, Inc.'s (NYSE:HZO) value has fallen 15% in the last week, but insiders who sold US$997k worth of stock over the last year have had less success. Insiders would probably have been better off holding on to their shares given that the average selling price of US$32.61 is still lower than the current share price.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

MarineMax Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive VP & Chief Revenue Officer, Charles Cashman, for US$349k worth of shares, at about US$34.92 per share. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$28.37. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Insiders own 3.9% of MarineMax shares, worth about US$29m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
