OPENLANE (NYSE:KAR) Shareholders Are up 3.6% This Past Week, but Still in the Red Over the Last Five Years

OPENLANE(纽约证券交易所代码:KAR)股东上周上涨了3.6%,但在过去五年中仍处于亏损状态

While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the OPENLANE, Inc. (NYSE:KAR) share price up 11% in a single quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been less than pleasing. You would have done a lot better buying an index fund, since the stock has dropped 72% in that half decade.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last five years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

We know that OPENLANE has been profitable in the past. However, it made a loss in the last twelve months, suggesting profit may be an unreliable metric at this stage. Other metrics might give us a better handle on how its value is changing over time.

Arguably, the revenue drop of 16% a year for half a decade suggests that the company can't grow in the long term. That could explain the weak share price.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between OPENLANE's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for OPENLANE shareholders, and that cash payout explains why its total shareholder loss of 23%, over the last 5 years, isn't as bad as the share price return.

A Different Perspective

OPENLANE shareholders gained a total return of 0.8% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. But at least that's still a gain! Over five years the TSR has been a reduction of 4% per year, over five years. It could well be that the business is stabilizing. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that OPENLANE is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...
