Pulling Back 3.5% This Week, Verint Systems' NASDAQ:VRNT) Five-year Decline in Earnings May Be Coming Into Investors Focus
It is a pleasure to report that the Verint Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:VRNT) is up 39% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been less than pleasing. You would have done a lot better buying an index fund, since the stock has dropped 43% in that half decade.
Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.
We don't think that Verint Systems' modest trailing twelve month profit has the market's full attention at the moment. We think revenue is probably a better guide. Generally speaking, we'd consider a stock like this alongside loss-making companies, simply because the quantum of the profit is so low. It would be hard to believe in a more profitable future without growing revenues.
Over half a decade Verint Systems reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 8.3% for each year. That's not what investors generally want to see. The stock hasn't done well for shareholders in the last five years, falling 7%, annualized. Unfortunately, though, it makes sense given the lack of either profits or revenue growth. It might be worth watching for signs of a turnaround - buyers are probably expecting one.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between Verint Systems' total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. We note that Verint Systems' TSR, at 12% is higher than its share price return of -43%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.
A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 19% in the last year, Verint Systems shareholders lost 25%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 2% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Verint Systems , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
