While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the BrightSpire Capital, Inc. (NYSE:BRSP) share price has gained 11% in the last three months. But if you look at the last five years the returns have not been good. In fact, the share price is down 58%, which falls well short of the return you could get by buying an index fund.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

Given that BrightSpire Capital only made minimal earnings in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue to gauge its business development. Generally speaking, we'd consider a stock like this alongside loss-making companies, simply because the quantum of the profit is so low. For shareholders to have confidence a company will grow profits significantly, it must grow revenue.

In the last five years BrightSpire Capital saw its revenue shrink by 9.9% per year. That puts it in an unattractive cohort, to put it mildly. It seems appropriate, then, that the share price slid about 10% annually during that time. It's fair to say most investors don't like to invest in loss making companies with falling revenue. You'd want to research this company pretty thoroughly before buying, it looks a bit too risky for us.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for BrightSpire Capital the TSR over the last 5 years was -36%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

BrightSpire Capital shareholders gained a total return of 5.3% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 6% endured over half a decade. So this might be a sign the business has turned its fortunes around. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - BrightSpire Capital has 4 warning signs (and 1 which doesn't sit too well with us) we think you should know about.
