Investors in Federal Signal (NYSE:FSS) Have Seen Stellar Returns of 273% Over the Past Five Years
The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. Long term Federal Signal Corporation (NYSE:FSS) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 256% in five years. On top of that, the share price is up 19% in about a quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 14% in 90 days).
Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Over half a decade, Federal Signal managed to grow its earnings per share at 9.5% a year. This EPS growth is lower than the 29% average annual increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Federal Signal the TSR over the last 5 years was 273%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Federal Signal shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 49% over one year. And that does include the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 30% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. If you would like to research Federal Signal in more detail then you might want to take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in the company.
