Muyuan Foods' (SZSE:002714) Investors Will Be Pleased With Their Strong 103% Return Over the Last Five Years

When we invest, we're generally looking for stocks that outperform the market average. And while active stock picking involves risks (and requires diversification) it can also provide excess returns. For example, the Muyuan Foods Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002714) share price is up 94% in the last 5 years, clearly besting the market return of around 7.5% (ignoring dividends).

Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the last half decade, Muyuan Foods became profitable. That's generally thought to be a genuine positive, so we would expect to see an increasing share price.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Muyuan Foods' TSR for the last 5 years was 103%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

The total return of 22% received by Muyuan Foods shareholders over the last year isn't far from the market return of -20%. The silver lining is that longer term investors would have made a total return of 15% per year over half a decade. If the stock price has been impacted by changing sentiment, rather than deteriorating business conditions, it could spell opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Muyuan Foods has 2 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
