It might be of some concern to shareholders to see the Qualys, Inc. (NASDAQ:QLYS) share price down 12% in the last month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been very strong. We think most investors would be happy with the 101% return, over that period. To some, the recent pullback wouldn't be surprising after such a fast rise. The more important question is whether the stock is too cheap or too expensive today.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Qualys achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 23% per year. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 15% over the same period. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock.

We're pleased to report that Qualys shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 40% over one year.
