Possible Bearish Signals With Crane Insiders Disposing Stock
Possible Bearish Signals With Crane Insiders Disposing Stock
Many Crane Company (NYSE:CR) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Crane
Crane
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the President, Max Mitchell, for US$2.9m worth of shares, at about US$76.81 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$133. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was only 10% of Max Mitchell's holding.

Over the last three months, we've seen significant insider selling at Crane. In total, Executive VP Anthony D'Iorio sold US$617k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. Overall this makes us a bit cautious, but it's not the be all and end all.
Insider Ownership Of Crane
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Crane insiders own about US$67m worth of shares. That equates to 0.9% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
