The One-year Earnings Decline Is Not Helping AdvanSix's (NYSE:ASIX Share Price, as Stock Falls Another 15% in Past Week

一年的收益下降对AdvanSix(纽约证券交易所代码:ASIX)的股价没有帮助,因为过去一周股价又下跌了15%

It's easy to match the overall market return by buying an index fund. But if you buy individual stocks, you can do both better or worse than that. Investors in AdvanSix Inc. (NYSE:ASIX) have tasted that bitter downside in the last year, as the share price dropped 41%. That's disappointing when you consider the market returned 26%. Even if you look out three years, the returns are still disappointing, with the share price down30% in that time. More recently, the share price has dropped a further 20% in a month. Importantly, this could be a market reaction to the recently released financial results. You can check out the latest numbers in our company report.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

While AdvanSix made a small profit, in the last year, we think that the market is probably more focussed on the top line growth at the moment. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. For shareholders to have confidence a company will grow profits significantly, it must grow revenue.

AdvanSix's revenue didn't grow at all in the last year. In fact, it fell 21%. That's not what investors generally want to see. Shareholders have seen the share price drop 41% in that time. That seems pretty reasonable given the lack of both profits and revenue growth. We think most holders must believe revenue growth will improve, or else costs will decline.

A Different Perspective

AdvanSix shareholders are down 39% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 26%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 4% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with AdvanSix (at least 1 which is a bit unpleasant) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
