Those following along with V.F. Corporation (NYSE:VFC) will no doubt be intrigued by the recent purchase of shares by Bracken Darrell, President of the company, who spent a stonking US$997k on stock at an average price of US$13.26. That purchase boosted their holding by 52%, which makes us wonder if the move was inspired by quietly confident deeply-felt optimism.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At V.F

Notably, that recent purchase by President Bracken Darrell was not the only time they bought V.F shares this year. They previously made an even bigger purchase of US$1.0m worth of shares at a price of US$15.38 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being US$13.80). Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 251.90k shares worth US$3.9m. But insiders sold 4.00 shares worth US$62.1. In the last twelve months there was more buying than selling by V.F insiders. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. If you click on the chart, you can see all the individual transactions, including the share price, individual, and the date!

Does V.F Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. V.F insiders own about US$50m worth of shares. That equates to 1.0% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchase. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses.
