Looking at Calix, Inc.'s (NYSE:CALX ) insider transactions over the last year, we can see that insiders were net sellers. That is, there were more number of shares sold by insiders than there were purchased.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Calix Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the insider, Donald Listwin, for US$4.3m worth of shares, at about US$43.15 per share. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$34.94). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price. Donald Listwin was the only individual insider to sell over the last year.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Calix insiders own 11% of the company, currently worth about US$252m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
