When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the Cheniere Energy, Inc. (NYSE:LNG) share price has soared 137% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. And in the last week the share price has popped 7.0%.

Since the stock has added US$2.5b to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the last half decade, Cheniere Energy became profitable. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Cheniere Energy the TSR over the last 5 years was 144%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Cheniere Energy shareholders gained a total return of 14% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. If we look back over five years, the returns are even better, coming in at 19% per year for five years. It's quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Cheniere Energy (at least 1 which is a bit unpleasant) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
