For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Cabot (NYSE:CBT). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

Cabot's Improving Profits

In the last three years Cabot's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Cabot's EPS shot up from US$5.59 to US$8.02; a result that's bound to keep shareholders happy. That's a impressive gain of 44%.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Unfortunately, Cabot's revenue dropped 8.2% last year, but the silver lining is that EBIT margins improved from 13% to 15%. That's not a good look.

Are Cabot Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Owing to the size of Cabot, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a significant proportion of the company. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. With a whopping US$69m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. That's certainly enough to let shareholders know that management will be very focussed on long term growth.
