Viewing insider transactions for Trupanion, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:TRUP ) over the last year, we see that insiders were net buyers. This means that a larger number of shares were purchased by insiders in relation to shares sold.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Trupanion

Trupanion

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Founder Darryl Graham Rawlings bought US$500k worth of shares at a price of US$24.14 per share. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$29.74), we still think insider buying is a positive. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Insiders At Trupanion Have Bought Stock Recently

Trupanion

There has been significantly more insider buying, than selling, at Trupanion, over the last three months. We can see that Founder Darryl Graham Rawlings paid US$500k for shares in the company. But insiders only sold shares worth US$145k. Insiders have spent more buying shares than they have selling, so on balance we think they are are probably optimistic.

Insider Ownership Of Trupanion

Trupanion

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 5.5% of Trupanion shares, worth about US$65m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Trupanion Insiders?

It is good to see the recent insider purchase. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. But on the other hand, the company made a loss during the last year, which makes us a little cautious. Given that insiders also own a fair bit of Trupanion we think they are probably pretty confident of a bright future. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing. While conducting our analysis, we found that Trupanion has 1 warning sign and it would be unwise to ignore it.
