Have MongoDB Insiders Been Selling Stock?

Have MongoDB Insiders Been Selling Stock?

We wouldn't blame MongoDB, Inc. (NASDAQ:MDB) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that John McMahon, a company insider, recently netted about US$2.3m selling shares at an average price of US$228. That sale reduced their total holding by 23% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At MongoDB

The Independent Director, Roelof Botha, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$10m worth of shares at a price of US$375 each. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$250). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Does MongoDB Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. MongoDB insiders own about US$607m worth of shares (which is 3.3% of the company). Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
