While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Ameresco Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Ameresco

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Founder George Sakellaris for US$903k worth of shares, at about US$22.66 per share. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of US$28.81. Because it occurred at a lower valuation, it doesn't tell us much about whether insiders might find today's price attractive.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid US$2.2m for 90.00k shares. But they sold 2.16k shares for US$108k. In the last twelve months there was more buying than selling by Ameresco insiders. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Does Ameresco Boast High Insider Ownership?

Ameresco

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that Ameresco insiders own 39% of the company, worth about US$585m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
