BrightView Holdings (NYSE:BV) has had a rough week with its share price down 7.7%. We, however decided to study the company's financials to determine if they have got anything to do with the price decline. Long-term fundamentals are usually what drive market outcomes, so it's worth paying close attention. In this article, we decided to focus on BrightView Holdings' ROE.

Return on Equity or ROE is a test of how effectively a company is growing its value and managing investors' money. Put another way, it reveals the company's success at turning shareholder investments into profits.

How Is ROE Calculated?

The formula for return on equity is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for BrightView Holdings is:

2.9% = US$51m ÷ US$1.8b (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).

The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. Another way to think of that is that for every $1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn $0.03 in profit.

What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?

So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company's earnings growth potential. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.

A Side By Side comparison of BrightView Holdings' Earnings Growth And 2.9% ROE

As you can see, BrightView Holdings' ROE looks pretty weak. Even compared to the average industry ROE of 12%, the company's ROE is quite dismal. As a result, BrightView Holdings' flat earnings over the past five years doesn't come as a surprise given its lower ROE.

We then compared BrightView Holdings' net income growth with the industry and found that the company's growth figure is lower than the average industry growth rate of 12% in the same 5-year period, which is a bit concerning.

Is BrightView Holdings Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?

BrightView Holdings

BrightView Holdings doesn't pay any regular dividends, meaning that potentially all of its profits are being reinvested in the business. However, this doesn't explain why the company hasn't seen any growth. So there could be some other explanations in that regard. For instance, the company's business may be deteriorating.

BrightView Holdings

Conclusion

结论

In total, we're a bit ambivalent about BrightView Holdings' performance. Even though it appears to be retaining most of its profits, given the low ROE, investors may not be benefitting from all that reinvestment after all.
