Long term investing can be life changing when you buy and hold the truly great businesses. And we've seen some truly amazing gains over the years. Don't believe it? Then look at the Boise Cascade Company (NYSE:BCC) share price. It's 386% higher than it was five years ago. This just goes to show the value creation that some businesses can achieve. And in the last week the share price has popped 7.0%.

Since the stock has added US$322m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the last half decade, Boise Cascade became profitable. Sometimes, the start of profitability is a major inflection point that can signal fast earnings growth to come, which in turn justifies very strong share price gains. Since the company was unprofitable five years ago, but not three years ago, it's worth taking a look at the returns in the last three years, too. Indeed, the Boise Cascade share price has gained 162% in three years. During the same period, EPS grew by 16% each year. This EPS growth is lower than the 38% average annual increase in the share price over three years. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did three years ago.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Boise Cascade's TSR for the last 5 years was 561%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Boise Cascade shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 32% over one year. That's including the dividend. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 46% a year, is even better. The pessimistic view would be that be that the stock has its best days behind it, but on the other hand the price might simply be moderating while the business itself continues to execute. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Boise Cascade better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Boise Cascade (at least 1 which is a bit unpleasant) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
