Orion (NYSE:OEC) Will Want To Turn Around Its Return Trends

Orion(纽交所:OEC)将需要扭转其回报趋势
Simply Wall St ·  07/19 09:18

Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. Although, when we looked at Orion (NYSE:OEC), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Orion:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.14 = US$192m ÷ (US$1.9b - US$469m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).

0.14 = 1.92亿美元 ÷(19亿美元至4.69亿美元)(基于截至2024年3月的过去十二个月)。

So, Orion has an ROCE of 14%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Chemicals industry average of 8.8% it's much better.

What Can We Tell From Orion's ROCE Trend?

When we looked at the ROCE trend at Orion, we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 17% over the last five years. On the other hand, the company has been employing more capital without a corresponding improvement in sales in the last year, which could suggest these investments are longer term plays. It's worth keeping an eye on the company's earnings from here on to see if these investments do end up contributing to the bottom line.

In Conclusion...

总之...

To conclude, we've found that Orion is reinvesting in the business, but returns have been falling. And with the stock having returned a mere 23% in the last five years to shareholders, you could argue that they're aware of these lackluster trends. As a result, if you're hunting for a multi-bagger, we think you'd have more luck elsewhere.
