Some Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) shareholders may be a little concerned to see that the Executive Chairman, James Gorman, recently sold a substantial US$21m worth of stock at a price of US$105 per share. That sale reduced their total holding by 26% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.

Morgan Stanley Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent sale by James Gorman is the biggest insider sale of Morgan Stanley shares that we've seen in the last year. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$102. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

Insider Ownership Of Morgan Stanley

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Morgan Stanley insiders own 0.2% of the company, currently worth about US$347m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
