Insiders who bought ASP Isotopes Inc. (NASDAQ:ASPI) stock lover the last 12 months are probably not as affected by last week's 26% loss. Even after accounting for the recent loss, the US$452.4k worth of stock purchased by them is now worth US$1.01m or in other words, their investment continues to give good returns.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At ASP Isotopes

ASP Isotopes

The insider Joshua Donfeld made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$100k worth of shares at a price of US$0.96 each. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of US$2.83. Because it occurred at a lower valuation, it doesn't tell us much about whether insiders might find today's price attractive.

While ASP Isotopes insiders bought shares during the last year, they didn't sell. The average buy price was around US$1.27. We don't deny that it is nice to see insiders buying stock in the company. But we must note that the investments were made at well below today's share price. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. If you click on the chart, you can see all the individual transactions, including the share price, individual, and the date!

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that ASP Isotopes insiders own 23% of the company, worth about US$44m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

It is good to see the recent insider purchase. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. But on the other hand, the company made a loss during the last year, which makes us a little cautious. Given that insiders also own a fair bit of ASP Isotopes we think they are probably pretty confident of a bright future. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
