The Nations Technologies Inc. (SZSE:300077) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 36%. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 11% in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, it's still not a stretch to say that Nations Technologies' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 6.7x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Semiconductor industry in China, where the median P/S ratio is around 5.7x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Has Nations Technologies Performed Recently?

For instance, Nations Technologies' receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the company to put the disappointing revenue performance behind them over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Nations Technologies' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Nations Technologies' is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 2.0%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 164% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 35% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is pretty similar based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

With this information, we can see why Nations Technologies is trading at a fairly similar P/S to the industry. It seems most investors are expecting to see average growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a moderate amount for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Nations Technologies' P/S

Nations Technologies' stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we've seen, Nations Technologies' three-year revenue trends seem to be contributing to its P/S, given they look similar to current industry expectations. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenue won't throw up any surprises. Given the current circumstances, it seems improbable that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.

Having said that, be aware Nations Technologies is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis, you should know about.
