Over the past year, many Burlington Stores, Inc. (NYSE:BURL) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Burlington Stores

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Group President & Chief Merchandising Officer, Jennifer Vecchio, for US$1.1m worth of shares, at about US$225 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$250. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. We note that the biggest single sale was only 9.2% of Jennifer Vecchio's holding.
