Losing money on investments is something no shareholder enjoys, least of all institutional investors who saw their holdings value drop by 6.4% last week. However, the 17% one-year return to shareholders might have softened the blow. We would assume however, that they would be on the lookout for weakness in the future.

What Does The Institutional Ownership Tell Us About Zscaler?

Institutional investors commonly compare their own returns to the returns of a commonly followed index. So they generally do consider buying larger companies that are included in the relevant benchmark index.

We can see that Zscaler does have institutional investors; and they hold a good portion of the company's stock. This implies the analysts working for those institutions have looked at the stock and they like it. But just like anyone else, they could be wrong. When multiple institutions own a stock, there's always a risk that they are in a 'crowded trade'. When such a trade goes wrong, multiple parties may compete to sell stock fast. This risk is higher in a company without a history of growth. You can see Zscaler's historic earnings and revenue below, but keep in mind there's always more to the story.

For context, the second largest shareholder holds about 18% of the shares outstanding, followed by an ownership of 5.9% by the third-largest shareholder. Jagtar Chaudhry, who is the second-largest shareholder, also happens to hold the title of Chief Executive Officer.

We also observed that the top 6 shareholders account for more than half of the share register, with a few smaller shareholders to balance the interests of the larger ones to a certain extent.

Insider Ownership Of Zscaler

Zscaler

The definition of an insider can differ slightly between different countries, but members of the board of directors always count. Management ultimately answers to the board. However, it is not uncommon for managers to be executive board members, especially if they are a founder or the CEO.

I generally consider insider ownership to be a good thing. However, on some occasions it makes it more difficult for other shareholders to hold the board accountable for decisions.
