We think intelligent long term investing is the way to go. But no-one is immune from buying too high. To wit, the EchoStar Corporation (NASDAQ:SATS) share price managed to fall 57% over five long years. That's an unpleasant experience for long term holders. We also note that the stock has performed poorly over the last year, with the share price down 27%. And the share price decline continued over the last week, dropping some 14%.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

Because EchoStar made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last half decade, EchoStar saw its revenue increase by 54% per year. That's well above most other pre-profit companies. In contrast, the share price is has averaged a loss of 9% per year - that's quite disappointing. It's safe to say investor expectations are more grounded now. If you think the company can keep up its revenue growth, you'd have to consider the possibility that there's an opportunity here.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. You can see what analysts are predicting for EchoStar in this interactive graph of future profit estimates.

Investors in EchoStar had a tough year, with a total loss of 27%, against a market gain of about 19%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 9% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for EchoStar you should know about.
