Cryoport (NASDAQ:CYRX) Shareholders Are up 15% This Past Week, but Still in the Red Over the Last Three Years
It's nice to see the Cryoport, Inc. (NASDAQ:CYRX) share price up 15% in a week. But only the myopic could ignore the astounding decline over three years. The share price has sunk like a leaky ship, down 85% in that time. So we're relieved for long term holders to see a bit of uplift. The thing to think about is whether the business has really turned around. We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It's a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it's worth keeping in mind there's more to life than money, anyway.
While the stock has risen 15% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.
Given that Cryoport didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.
In the last three years, Cryoport saw its revenue grow by 5.0% per year, compound. Given it's losing money in pursuit of growth, we are not really impressed with that. But the share price crash at 23% per year does seem a bit harsh! We generally don't try to 'catch the falling knife'. Before considering a purchase, take a look at the losses the company is racking up.

While the broader market gained around 27% in the last year, Cryoport shareholders lost 37%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 10% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for Cryoport you should be aware of.
