Multiple Insiders Sold Arteris Shares Presenting Weak Signs For Investors

A number of Arteris, Inc. (NASDAQ:AIP) insiders sold their shares in the last year, which may have raised concerns among investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Arteris Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Chairman, Karel Janac, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$71k worth of shares at a price of US$7.03 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$7.28). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 0.1% of Karel Janac's holding.

Arteris Insiders Are Selling The Stock

Artesis

Over the last three months, we've seen significant insider selling at Arteris. In total, insiders sold US$126k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. Overall this makes us a bit cautious, but it's not the be all and end all.

Does Arteris Boast High Insider Ownership?

Artesis

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that Arteris insiders own 32% of the company, worth about US$93m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
