Possible Bearish Signals With Travel + Leisure Insiders Disposing Stock

Possible Bearish Signals With Travel + Leisure Insiders Disposing Stock

Simply Wall St ·  09/20 07:47

In the last year, many Travel + Leisure Co. (NYSE:TNL) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Travel + Leisure Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the insider, Olivier Chavy, sold US$829k worth of shares at a price of US$38.39 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$44.19. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was 100% of Olivier Chavy's holding.

Insiders At Travel + Leisure Have Sold Stock Recently

The last three months saw significant insider selling at Travel + Leisure. In total, insiders sold US$229k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. In light of this it's hard to argue that all the insiders think that the shares are a bargain.

Does Travel + Leisure Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Travel + Leisure insiders own about US$62m worth of shares. That equates to 2.1% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Travel + Leisure Tell Us?

Insiders sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And our longer term analysis of insider transactions didn't bring confidence, either. On the plus side, Travel + Leisure makes money, and is growing profits. While insiders do own shares, they don't own a heap, and they have been selling. So we'd only buy after careful consideration. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company. At Simply Wall St, we've found that Travel + Leisure has 2 warning signs (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that deserve your attention before going any further with your analysis.
